Fishing and Shooting Sketches, by Grover Cleveland, is a delightful volume on outdoor sports in which the author makes a strong and effective plea for fair play, and the true spirit of sportsmanship. He emphasizes the pleasure that is derived from genuine skill, not for the sake of the slaughter of innocents. President Cleveland is most successful in defending the fisherman, even excusing the big fish that just escaped. He writes about rabbit hunting, quail shooting, duck hunting, and plover shooting on the coast in summer - a sport that indeed requires both patience and skill.
There is a genuineness and simplicity about these stories, or "sketches," that is truly refreshing.
President Cleveland is a true sportsman. His attitude is a model for all who pursue sports with a rod or gun.
